Fifteen Filipino students courageously decided to take on the challenge of starting their Korean Language journey through Korean Beginner 1 class with Exploring Korean last July 1. Full of enthusiasm, the class, which was led by Gizelle Seonsaengnim, started with Self-Introduction of each student by which they stated their name, age, occupation, and hobbies/interests to know each other personally. These students will be together in a span of 9 weeks, so to be at ease with one another, personal interests were uttered. This was followed by sharing the reason why they want to study Korean Language to emphasize the motivation of each student, then their short term and long term goals to establish their goals in learning Korean Language. Lastly, they also shared their expectations about the class.

Ages ranged from 19 to 37 years old but a lot of interests were common from watching Korean Drama, listening and staning to Kpop up to reading manhwa and webtoons which also served as their motivations in learning Korean Language. Few of the students wanted to try their luck in fancalls and fansign events, so conversing with their idols also serve as one of their motivations to learn Korean. Other motivation was related to ease of communication during travel and during work. Their common short term goals at the end of the 9-week program consisted of learning the basics like reading and writing Hangeul and expressing survival Korean words and phrases that will help them when they travel to Korea. On the other hand, their long term and ultimate goals were enabling them to watch k-contents like kdrama and vlives of idols without relying on English subtitles and also conversing with the Native Koreans fluently. These students knew well about the testimonials of the class’ previous students, so they expected that the class would be fun, interesting and full of student interactions and practices.

Gizelle Seonsaengnim also introduced herself to the students as a previously working Engineer in a Korean Manufacturing company but decided to pursue Korean Language Teaching full time from December 2022. She has been teaching Korean Language since 2017 but decided to do online Korean Language Teaching with Exploring Korean in 2021. She assured everyone that she would guide them all throughout the 9-week program and that it would be a lot of fun. However, she said that there would also be challenges that the students may face so they should hold on to their motivations well and always think of their goals in Korean Language learning. She also discussed that Korean Language learning is difficult but with deep motivation, dedication and will to really learn the language, students will be able to achieve their individual goals someday. One thing is for sure. She also mentioned that during their class in Exploring Korean, their learning would be maximized through consistent practice and student-student/student-teacher interaction.

The Korean Beginner 1 class officially started after that, wherein they learned about the importance of learning Hangeul, the Brief History of Hangeul and the Basic Vowels.
